Punctuation - Use of Period (.) (Basic English Grammar)

Punctuation is a mark that makes a meaning of a sentence clear. The most common punctuation mark is the period. A period is used to indicate the end of a sentence. It is also used to make a statement.

Period at the End of a Sentence

A period is used at the end of a sentence. It is used to make a statement. (यो चिन्ह वाक्यको अन्त्य संकेत गर्न प्रयोग गरीन्छ र नयाँ वाक्य निर्माण गर्न प्रयोग गरीन्छ ।)

• My name is Bill.
• I am 24 years old.
• I live in Seattle.
• I am a teacher.

Period after a Single Word

Sometimes a single word can be a complete sentence. (कहिलेकाहीँ एउटै शब्द पनि पूरा वाक्य हुन सक्छ ।)

• Hello.
• Good-bye.
• Stop.
• Go.

Period in Abbreviated Words

A period is used in abbreviated words or shortened words. Many words can be abbreviated. These are a few common examples. (Period छोटो रुप वा संक्षिप्त (छोटकरी) रुपमा लेखिन्छ । धैरै words हरु छोट्याउन सकिन्छ । यहाँ केही उदाहरण देखाइएको छ ।)

• Mister - Mr.
• Misses - Mrs.
• Doctor - Dr.
• Street Road - St. Rd.
• Avenue Boulevard - Ave. Blvd.
• Sunday: Sun.
• Monday - Mon.
• Tuesday - Tues.
• Wednesday - Wed.
• Thursday - Thurs.
• Friday - Fri. Sat.
• Saturday - Sat.
• January - Jan.
• February - Feb.
• March - Mar.
• April - Apr.
• May - May (no period)
• June - Jun.

Period in Numbers

Periods used in numbers are called decimal points. Decimal points separate a whole number and a fraction of a whole number. It is used when referring to temperature and money. (अंक वा संख्यामा लेखिने period लाई दशमलव भनिन्छ । दशमलवले पूर्ण संख्या वा भिन्नलाई छुट्याउने काम गर्दछ । तापक्रम र पैसालाई देखाउनुपर्दा यो प्रयोग गरिन्छ ।)

• The book is $10.99. ($10.99 = ten dollars and ninety-nine cents)
• Normal body temperature is 98.6 Fahrenheit. (98.6 = ninety-eight point six).
